The Company :

Playscreen, LLC enables companies and individuals to create a presence in the mobile marketplace.  We enable publishing, social networking and advertising for mobile users. Playscreen also publishes mobile applications and content into the mobile marketplace.

Playscreen addresses the largest trends in mobile technology:

  1. Social Communications:  The desire of mobile users to communicate with each other via voice, text and pictures as well as play games together.
  2. Phone Personalization: User purchase and customization of the ringtone, screen background, and screen saver on their phone.
  3. User Generated Content: The explosion in text-blogging.  Creating pictures, audio, and video with today’s advanced mobile handsets.
  4. Advertising: Reaching consumers who have opted in to accept mobile ads and promotions.  Ad supported game titles.
  5. Games and Applications: Playscreen publishes games and other applications on multiple mobile platforms, including the new Apple iPhone.  Playscreen has acquired a catalog of 13 mobile titles and multi-player mobile game technology in a settlement with Bonus Mobile Incorporated.

We create a marketplace where participants become mobile media publishers and monetize their creations in a manner similar to how eBay allows users to offer goods to a wide audience. By creating it's own marketplace the Playscreen community has a variety of purpose driven activities to engage with.  Much of the research across online communities highlights the requirement of purpose in sustaining communities over time.  Playscreen feeds the need for personalization, and rewards participation by including users in the value chain and the revenue share.

The Playscreen portal empowers users to create and self publish mobile content into a marketplace that is accessible on the web and directly on mobile handsets.  Users are given access to easy to use tools to create ringtones, wallpapers, comics and text messaging services.  Their content is made available to the public via personalized web, wap, and shortcode access. A dynamic marketplace in the manner of eBay™ is created where content is rated and sold, where users are empowered to create a mobile presence centered on the media they create, and given the ability to bring their content to the attention of mobile consumers.

Playscreen has launched a iPhone branded content portal under the name Fun4iPhone.com. Within five days of the announcement of Fun4iPhone.com and the iPhone ad suppored game ‘iWhack’ there were over 29,000 search results for the game as reported by Google.

Market and Opportunity:

In 2002, the number of global wireless subscribers surpassed one billion and subscriber growth is expected to continue as wireless communications increase in emerging markets, including China and India.  Highlighting this growth trajectory, the number of global wireless subscribers increased from approximately 749 million in 2000 to 1.3 billion in 2003, and is predicted to reach 2 billion subscribers by 2008, with the majority of this growth occurring in markets outside of the U.S., Western Europe, and Japan. The desire to personalize the most personal of devices has created a multi-billion dollar media market for mobile phones comprised of ringtones and wallpapers. Playscreen taps into this trend as more digital audio capable phones, camera-phones, video-phones and messaging push the creation of media from professionals to amateurs.  By building a marketplace for users to create and publish mobile content, Playscreen also creates a channel for the distribution of mobile games, services, and licensed content.

Ringtones allow users to personalize their mobile phone.  Currently a $4.9 billion  (2004) worldwide market ($500m US), with 30% of sales consisting of “digital recordings” (so called ‘mastertones’ as opposed to synthesized music) it is expect to transition to almost 100% digital by 2010 (Playscreen supports the creation and distribution of mastertones.) Continued growth is anticipated as the expansive installed cell phone base in the U.S. and overseas gains access to the next generation of enhanced handset technologies.  Specifically, manufacturers are increasingly specifying digital audio capabilities into mobile phones to enable the playback of “real tones” (digital recordings). According to research firm Telephia's Mobile Audio Report, 60 percent of mobile ringtone revenues come from sales of real tones, or ringtones that are based on the real song.  This is the focus of Playscreen’s ringtone creation tools.

Wallpapers are ‘background’ pictures that uses select for their mobile handsets. 7m mobile wallpapers are downloaded monthly in USA.

Text Messaging is the largest source of carrier revenue after voice.  SMS is expected to be the most widely used format for some years to come.  Messaging revenues estimated to reach 40b Euros by 2010.  There were almost 2.38 trillion text messages sent in 2004.
Mobile ad revenues is expect to be as high as $14.4 billion by 2011, according to a study by MoMac.  Some 13% of 16-24-year-olds have already responded to or clicked on a mobile ad.  Ad driven mobile games are achieving CPM’s as high as $30.
